The letter, which is available at vitamindforall.org also shows what they, the experts, take themselves (right hand column) and recommend. Collectively, they recommend between 2,000 and 4,000iu a day, based on the evidence, while taking between 2,000iu and 10,000iu per day. I take 3,000iu you day.
What you need depends on your blood levels. Their recommendation is eat and supplement whatever you need to achieve 25(OH)D serum levels over 75nmol/L ((30ng/ml), which is a widely endorsed minimum with evidence of reduced COVID-19 risk. In the UK a level below above 50nmol/l is considered adequate, but this is not enough to reduce your risk significantly. Sun exposure is a major source of What it does: Helps maintain strong and healthy bones by retaining calcium. Deficiency Signs: Joint pain or stiffness, backache, tooth decay, muscle cramps, hair loss…. so if you live far from the Equator, especially in winter, you are going to need a lot more. Age, skin colour and weight also increase vitamin D need.
In a nutshell, they say that higher vitamin D blood levels are associated with lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Higher D levels are also associated with lower risk of a severe case (hospitalization, ICU, or death). Intervention studies (including RCTs) indicate that vitamin D can be a very effective treatment. Many papers reveal several biological mechanisms by which vitamin D influences COVID-19. Causal inference modelling, the intervention studies & the biological mechanisms indicate that vitamin D’s influence on COVID-19 is very likely causal, not just correlation.
Along with What it does: Strengthens immune system – fights infections. Makes collagen, keeping bones, skin and joints firm and strong. Antioxidant, detoxifying pollutants and protecting against…, everyone needs to take vitamin D to help prevent covid and minimise duration and severity. Our Governments should tell people this. That’s what vitamin D experts and medics all over the world are saying.
Don’t Miss my Podcast WITH vITAMIN D EXPERT WILLIAM GRANT
On Friday 12 February, I’m going to be talking to my ‘go to’ guy for anything to do with vitamin D. For more years, or decades than I care to remember, Dr William Grant has been the ultimate vitamin D ferret, squirreling away all the studies, digging deeply into the mechanisms, and working closely with the Grassroots health initiative, which we’ll talk about, and the ‘informant’ for ultimate digital resource.
William Grant is the Founder and Director of Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center, San Francisco. This is a non-profit organization devoted to research and education regarding diet, UVB exposure and vitamin D for reduced risk of chronic and infectious diseases.
Listen to my podcast available from 7pm, Friday 12 February 2021.
ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH VITAMIN D?
