Millions on Statins ‘do not need them’

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that as many as 40% of those prescribed statins will be recommended to stop them if new guidelines, based on science, come into force. The study, by researchers at the University of Pittsburg, the University of Michigan and the Beth Isreal Deaconess Medican centre examined the potential impact of implementing the proposed new ‘PREVENT’ equations released by the American Heart Association in November 2023. If adopted, the number of adults recommended for statins could decrease from 45.4 million to 28.3 million.

Dr Malcolm Kendrick, author the Cholesterol Con and The Clot Thickens, points out that:

  • People with higher cholesterol tend to live longer and low cholesterol (below 4mmol/l) increases dementia risk
  • People with heart disease tend to have low levels of cholesterol
  • Cholesterol-lowering of a population does not reduce the rate of heart disease

The ridiculous NICE calculator used by GPs, calculating statin need based only on age and cholesterol level, had me recommended statins for life, despite every single real indicator of risk being optimal. There simply is no evidence that a cholesterol below 6mmol/l is any reason for concern in an otherwise healthy person, without high blood pressure or any prior cardiovascular disease. At every lecture someone has come up to me, querying their GP’s recommendation that they should be on statins for life. None were told that statins block the conversion of Co-Enzyme Q10 into its active form, hence the need to always supplement CoQ10 if on statins.

Cardiovascular disease, especially in older people, is strongly linked to:

  • raised homocysteine (above 11mcmol/L)
  • blood sugar problems – keep your triglyceride level below 1mmol/l – sugar turns into fat – and your HbA1c level below 5.4% (36mmol/mol or 100mg/dl)
  • lack of vitamin C – supplement at least 1,000mg a day
  • lack of omega-3 – make sure your omega-3 index is above 8%
