Lose weight before you get pregnant – new study recommends

Obese women in their first pregnancy have a much greater risk of giving birth to an underweight baby, having pre-eclampsia, or a premature birth.

It is often assumed that overweight mothers give birth to overweight babies, but this study published today in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology shows a more worrying trend towards underweight babies. One of the best ways to lose weight healthily is a low GL diet. One of the best predictors of a healthy baby, and healthy pregnancy, is having a low homocysteine level. Homocysteine is lowered by increased B vitamins, which means eating more wholefoods, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and greens. Zinc deficiency is also a common cause of underweight babies. These foods are naturally high in zinc. My book Optimum Nutrition Before, During and After Pregnancy, explains exactly what to do.
