Government Response to Vaccine Petition

If you signed the petition against restrictions on those who choose not to have a Covid-19 vaccination you’ll be pleased to hear that over 100,000 signatures were achieved, which has forced this first Government response from the Department of Health and Social Care. It shows just how misleading and factually inaccurate the campaign to promote vaccination already is. Here are the key points of the Government’s response and my comments.

“There are currently no plans to place restrictions on those who refuse to have any potential Covid-19 vaccine.”

Comment: Good – note ‘currently’. So not good enough.

“After clean water, vaccination is the most effective and crucial public health intervention.”

Comment: This is not true. UK deaths from diseases that can be avoided by vaccination in these current times are relatively few. There are between one and zero measles deaths a year, the last infant death being in 2016. There is no evidence yet that the HPV vaccine has effected cervical cancer deaths, so really we are talking about the flu vaccine which has an efficacy of between 10 (2017-18) and 34% (2018-19). This will save some lives in a year, optimistically in the order of 1,000s. The Government’s complacency and ignorance about nutrition has allowed sugar-related deaths, linked to diabetes and obesity, to hit epic proportions. In the UK the number of preventable deaths is estimated at 100 a day or 36,500 a year! Preventable diabetes related deaths alone stand at 461 a week, according to Diabetes UK. To put this into context, the deaths caused by our addiction to sugar and junk food every decade exceeds the total deaths of people from the UK in World War 2. If you want to save lives prevent obesity, diabetes and dementia.

“It is vital that a significant proportion of people who are offered take up a Covid-19 vaccine in order to protect themselves as well as other vulnerable individuals. Averting a second wave is a key priority for the government and high take up of a vaccine when available will greatly contribute to that.”

Comment: There is no way the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine or any other vaccine will be a tried and tested vaccine in time to prevent a ’second wave’ if there is one. Firstly, those vaccinated have to get infected – and then not get sick. Also, safety has to be established. This cannot be done in 4 months – the time left until peak flu season. If the Government were serious about protecting people and vulnerable individuals they’d be encouraging a) vitamin D testing and supplementation to achieve the level (circa 100nmol/l) which confers best protection: b) prescribing vitamin C to all who become infected at a dose of 1 gram an hour until symptom-free, which would pretty much eliminate risk of death; c) mandate vitamin C+steroids+anticoagulants in ICU cases which has resulted in no deaths in those under 85 without a previously existing end-stage disease. You can’t get ‘herd immunity’ on flu viruses as they mutate all the time. Yes, you can lessen the population viral impact but first you do have to prove that the vaccine does that. We won’t know that until those vaccinated are exposed to a winter flu season. It is a nice idea but highly unlikely to be more effective than, for example vitamin C, the cost of which is a fraction of the cost of vaccination and one the public would be more likely to buy into if the Government stood behind proper nutritional education of both the public and medical profession.

“Immunisations save thousands of lives every year by preventing outbreaks of serious infectious diseases and, in cases such as smallpox and polio, eliminating diseases in the UK altogether.”

Comment: Really? Where’s the evidence of thousands of lives saved each year? Coronaviruses are nothing like the non-mutating smallpox virus or polio and you really can’t compare the two. Smallpox was effectively eliminated in the 1930’s so this is rather irrelevant.

“Since the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1968, it is estimated that 20 million cases and 4,500 deaths have been averted in the UK.”

Comment: Estimated by whom? Measles, while it can be extremely unpleasant, is not realistically describable as a life-threatening disease in healthy children. There is about an infant death every five years in the UK from measles, or the complications of it, in severely immune-compromised children or adults despite up to a quarter of infants not being vaccinated. You can see the numbers for yourself here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/measles-deaths-by-age-group-from-1980-to-2013-ons-data/measles-notifications-and-deaths-in-england-and-wales-1940-to-2013
The last death recorded in a child was in 2016. The child is not listed as ‘unvaccinated’ so presumably was vaccinated. In 2008 a child with congenital immunodeficiency died. In 2006 a 13-year old boy with an underlying lung condition, who was taking immunosuppressive drugs, also died from the complications of measles. If a child is vitamin A deficient then measles can be life-threatening. In underdeveloped countries, deaths from measles have been virtually eliminated with adequate amounts of vitamin A.

“We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to do the right thing for their own health, and for the benefit of the wider community.”

Comment: Really? is that why there is virtually no funding for research into the prevention of dementia, endless vascilation re sugar taxes, no nutrition and health prevention taught in schools or medical schools, moves to shut down Public Health England whose mission is to ‘ protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the population’? Is that why we have one of the highest rates of obesity in the world and an obese prime minister at over 17 stone and 5ft9?

“There are currently no plans to introduce a Covid-19 vaccine in a way that penalises those who do not take up the vaccine. However, the Government will carefully consider all options to improve vaccination rates, should that be necessary.”

Comment: This, according to the new bill being presented to Parliament as we speak, cuts short safety tests including post-surveillance and allows marketing practices disallowed for licensed medicinal drugs and more. Vitamin C and D are not allowed to be marketed for disease prevention.

“High uptake of a Covid-19 vaccine is the best way we have, to protect our health, our jobs, and our economy at large.”

Comment: This is completely conjectural at this stage but stated as if it were a fact. It implies vaccination is better than social distancing, masks or lockdown. So, is the Government following the science or just telling stories it and gullible members of the public want to hear with disregard to the actual evidence? It seems, at this point, committed to the latter.
