The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, shows a 14% reduced risk for those taking multivitamins, and a 28% reduced risk for those taking higher dose vitamin E. While these results appear to contradict the meta-analyses published last year, which I have commented on in detail in my.Multivitamin use cuts heart disease risk Special Report The Truth About Antioxidants, in fact they are in accordance with many other surveys The negative impact of antioxidants in some former meta-analyses can largely be explained by the combined use of statins with vitamin E in people with cardiovascular disease. Statins are known to nullify, and potentially reverse the benefit of vitamin since vitamin E’s antioxidant function is dependent on CoQ10, production of which is blocked by statin drugs. In contrast, vitamin C use alone was not associated with CVD mortality and multivitamin and vitamin E use were not associated with cancer mortality. However, bear in mind that the majority of multivitamin takers take basic RDA level nutrients which are unlikely, in my opinion, to have a great impact on disease risk. if you would like to more about how to reduce your risk of heart disease read either Say No to Heart Disease or Food Is Better Medicine Than Drugs
