The main reason we age is because over the years our cells gradually become damaged by the “free radicals” that our bodies constantly produce as they make energy. This process, known as oxidation, is balanced by the antioxidants our bodies also produce. In the last century the ‘big idea’ in nutritional science was that increasing your intake of antioxidant nutrients, through supplements, could help to damp down oxidation and fight off ageing even more effectively.
It was an idea that influenced government policies around the world, creating the ‘five a day’ campaigns, spawning a massive market for antioxidant supplements, and literally thousands of studies to test it.
But in the last few years a number of big trials have apparently shown that taking extra antioxidants in the form of supplements doesn’t work. They have reported that antioxidants, far from staving off the big killers such as cancer and heart disease, can actually make them worse. Phrases such as “antioxidants can kill” feature regularly in newspaper headlines. It’s now common to see some doctors stating firmly that supplementing with antioxidants has been disproved. So what is going on?
Find out why some of the big studies are flawed, why certain medications can adversely effect the health benefits of antioxidants and what smokers can do to maximise their protection in the full article below.
